Spirituals On Tour: A Season of Outreach & Performance Our Spirituals On Tour program is a portable education module used to identify and explore the Negro spiritual song tradition as an important art form while describing the value of African-American music in world heritage and culture. Each presentation is tailored to be age-appropriate, fit within a practical time frame, provide a concentrated learning experience, unpack lessons from American history/sociology, showcase great talent in high-caliber performances. and expose audiences to the enjoyment of music. Winners’ Weekend: Mentoring & Music Our Winners’ Weekend & Suitable Airs experience gathers students, musicians and clinicians for seminars and work sessions dedicated wholly to the Negro spiritual song. It culminates in a grand concert featuring an accomplished headline soloist, winning GRADY-RAYAM PRIZE vocalists & MAULTSBY PRIZE pianists, the Bethune-Cookman University Concert Chorale, and other performance artists. WholeNote Society Gathering: Recital & Reception Our WholeNote Society Gathering is an evening for fellowship between our Board Members and a select group of Major Gift donors to raise funds that help sustain our agency. City of Hope: Concert for MLK Holiday Our annual City of Hope event salutes the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an eclectic program featuring dramatic presentations by artists of many genres. It coincides with the National Holiday in observance of this great American’s birthday. Project GRADY-RAYAM: Music Competition Events Our Project GRADY-RAYAM Music Competitions are the major vehicles we use to provide personal enrichment services and scholarship assistance to young artists. Senior high school students and collegians may enter solo voice and solo piano competitions to perform Negro spirituals before a jury panel. Selected winners receive scholastic-assistance grants for college, cash awards, and trophies. They also spend a year serving as ambassadors for skilled music performance and for the American Negro spiritual song.
